One of Microsoft Access’s great strengths is that it is so much more than simply a database, a fact that is often overlooked even by the IT community.
One of its strongest ‘hidden’ strengths is its Data Analysis potential, whether the data in question resides in an Access database or, more crucially, resides in one or more external data sources.
One such scenario would be to have an Access application, with no data, linked to a number of other data sources such as Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, accounting packages such as Sage or Quick Books or virtually any other third party software that contains data. The Access application could then bring all this data together, analyze it and produce dynamic reports displaying the results.
Thus every piece of data that is held in a business, no matter where it resides, can be analyzed as if it is held together in one place. And of course if all or some of the data is held within the Access database itself the same analysis can take place.
